Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development according to the United Nations

sustainable development goals

All United Nations Member States in 2015 adopted an agenda for sustainable development, which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership.
Beebio has integrated into its education approach a number of goals from this agenda in a flexible fashion, under a Project-Based Learning (PBL) frame. Our courses and program are available in such a way that allows tolerance between time constraints and curricular demand.

Flexible Project-Based Learning Approach

Beebio has integrated into its platform several sustainable development goals (SDG) courses from the agenda 2030 in a flexible fashion, under a Project-Based Learning (PBL) frame. Our courses and program are available in such a way that allows tolerance between time constraints and curricular demand.  The outline and main features are as follow.
Basic Structure
  1. Every course module introduces the SDG topic with  broad questions.
  2. Students are presented with different content material (videos, readings, activities, labs, links, etc.) related to the SDG topic and the question.
  3. The course goal can be developed and guided by involving teachers from different subjects (Math, Social Studies, Languages, Arts)  to acompany and enrich the learning experience process or it can also be developed solely by the science/biology teacher. We understand this type of collaboration between teachers can be challenging, so, PBL has been conceived in both ways.
  4. Teacher’s role is a “guide-by-side” type, actively helping students through their process of discovery, knowledge acquisition, inquiry, and critical thinking.
  5. Basic fundamental concepts and processes are included throughout the SDG courses.

Typically a course plan consists of flexible modules that teachers can choose from according to what suits their curriculum best. A course can be as short as 6h and as extent as up to 72h. Cross disciplinary content is available in different formats e.g.  activities, videos, polls, questions, labs, scientific literacy, etc.

PBL courses according to Sustainable Development Goals

  • Zero Hunger (Goal #2)
  • Good Health & Well-Being (Goal #3)
  • Clean Water & Sanitation (Goal #6)
  • Sustainable Cities & Communities (Goal #11)
  • Climate Action (Goal #13)
  • Life Below Water (Goal #14)
  • Life on Land (Goal#15)

Modules are cross disciplinary teaching content that typically last 6h. Per course plan, there is 1 core module that gives a broad view about the teaching goal and many other complementary flexible  modules. This is done in such a way to allow tolerance between time constraints and curricular requirements.

Throughout the different courses teachers promote and encourage different competences and abilities.

  • Communication
  • Math Application
  • Digital Competence
  • Teamwork
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Applied Science
  • Science literacy
